National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

What is NDIS?

The NDIS supports people with disabilities to build skills and capability so they can participate in the community and employment. Occupational Therapists have an important role to play in this.

The scheme can seem quite confusing, especially as you are getting started. People often ask us:

  • How do I receive funding?

  • Am I eligible?

  • How do I access the services and supports?

  • How do I make sure I choose the best support?

  • How am I sure I will get an OT that is best for me and my needs?

  • Where do I start?

Am I eligible?

Although NDIS will take some time to roll out completely to all areas of Australia, all eligible Victorians now have access to the NDIS.

To become a participant in the scheme check that you meet the eligibility criteria. To meet the criteria you must:

  • have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to take part in everyday activities

  • be under 65 years of age when you first enter the NDIS

  • be an Australian citizen or hold a permanent visa or a protected specialist category visa

  • live in Australia where the NDIS is available

For more information on NDIS eligibility, refer to:

How do I apply?

If you meet the criteria, the next step is to complete an Access Request Form. You can get an Access Request form from your Local Area Coordinator, Early Childhood Early Intervention partner (if your child is under 7), your local NDIA office or you can call 1800 800 110.

How can IndependentOT help?

Independent OT Service is a registered service provider with the NDIS.  To receive NDIS Occupational Therapy support through Agencies, your OT provider must be registered with NDIS.

We can assist you to achieve your independence goals as set out in your NDIS plan. Our Independent OT therapist can help you to:

  • maximise your independence,

  • assist you with your equipment

  • assist you with any required home modifications

  • help you live every day to the fullest

Who does IndependentOT work with?

We work with NDIS planners and support coordinators, NDIA agencies and direct with NDIS self-managed clients. We believe that under any NDIS care plan, collaboration leads to great results and we therefore often will work closely with family members, carers, and the support coordinators to ensure our clients receive the right support to achieve their independence goals.

We also recognise that funding your rehabilitation, or managing your condition, can be both complex and expensive so as part of our NDIS service we can help you manage any OT related funding you may be eligible for through the NDIS.
